Walking & cycling in Hell’s Gate
Hell’s Gate is one of the only Kenyan parks where you can walk or cycle among wildlife, because it has no resident big predators — an active, immersive safari.
Rent a bike at the gate or walk with your guide among zebra, Thomson’s gazelle, giraffe, buffalo and klipspringer, with the park’s famous red cliffs and rock towers (Fischer’s Tower) rising around you. It’s exhilarating and family-friendly, and utterly different from a vehicle safari.
The gorge, cliffs and geothermal scenery
A guided walk descends into Hell’s Gate Gorge, with sculpted rock, seasonal streams, hot springs and geothermal steam — the landscapes said to have inspired The Lion King.
The gorge is the scenic climax: narrow rock passages, warm springs and dramatic walls. The wider area is geothermally active (you’ll see the Olkaria power station’s steam), adding to the otherworldly feel. A local guide is required for the gorge and is included.

Best time to go
The dry seasons (late June–October and January–February) are best for walking and cycling — firmer trails and clearer gorge access; the green season is lush but the gorge can flood after heavy rain.
Year-round the lake and park reward a visit. In the dry months the gorge is safest and trails are easiest; after heavy rain the gorge may close for safety, so we check conditions before you travel and adjust if needed.

Tips for the day
