Flamingos and the lake
Lake Nakuru is world-famous for flamingos, though numbers vary year to year with the lake’s water level and salinity — sometimes millions, sometimes fewer as birds move between Rift Valley lakes.
The lake is a shallow alkaline (soda) lake whose algae feed lesser and greater flamingos. When conditions are right the shoreline turns pink; when water levels rise and dilute the lake, flamingos disperse to other Rift lakes like Bogoria. Either way the lake teems with pelicans, cormorants and other waterbirds year-round, so it remains a birding highlight.
One of Kenya’s best rhino parks
Lake Nakuru is a fenced rhino sanctuary holding both black and white rhino, making it one of the most reliable places in Kenya to see rhino — often several in a single visit.
The white rhino, in particular, graze the open lakeshore in the open, giving excellent, close viewing. Black rhino are more secretive but regularly seen. Combined with the endangered Rothschild’s giraffe, also protected here, Nakuru offers a concentration of rare species that’s hard to match on a day trip.
Best time to go
The dry seasons (late June–October and January–February) give the easiest game-viewing and firmest tracks; flamingo numbers depend on lake conditions rather than season.
Wildlife is visible year-round. Dry months mean thinner vegetation and better roads; the green season is lush and good for birds and scenery but afternoon rain is possible.
